Colleen Atwood is an American costume designer who has been nominated for 10 Academy Awards for her designs for film.  Read about her career at http://cfda.com/designer/colleen-atwood and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colleen_Atwood.  Pick two contrasting costumes she has designed for the same movie such as Alice in Wonderland, Edward Scissorhands or Chicago.

Referring to the elements of design in you handout:
a) Describe how the elements of design are used in both costumes;
b) Compare the differences and similarities of both costumes using the language of the elements of design; and
c) Decide which costume you think is the most effective for the character and justify your position referring to the elements of design and their effects in the overall design of the piece.

  1. A great and modern day activity... so creative Heather. Such a unique designer to choose as an example and for an assignment as well. The students might not have been born for Edward Scissorhands, but I am sure they have all seen Snow White and the Huntsman.

  4. Students would have a great time doing this assignment! I would like to do it too. I might even have students look for other costume designers, to have more variety of costumes to look at and expose them to more designers. Thanks for sharing this idea.
