Assignment 4: Textile Structures

Part 1:

Look at the samples of hand woven fabrics.  Follow the instructions in the weaving duotang to use one of the various looms available in the classroom to create a small sample of woven fabric.  Or, follow the instructions on the handout to make a woven bowl from folded magazine pages.  (10 cm X 10 cm.)

Part 2:

Examine the samples of hand knits and crochet work.  Using one of several knitting or crocheting websites to help you, use the knitting machine, knitting needles or crochet hook to make a small sample of knit fabric. (10 cm X 10 cm.)

Part 3:

Examine the samples of hand felted wools.  Use either needle felting or wet felting to create a sample of felted wool.  You may make either a two-dimensional or 3-dimensional object.

Part 4:

Use the iron, ironing board, and parchment paper to iron together clean plastic bags to make a sheet of fabric.  Think ahead and cut and arrange the plastic to make a deliberate pattern.

Part 5:

Put all samples in your portfolio with annotations or reflections.

  1. Heather, I really like the idea of your ironing project.... a neat fun activity that allows for creativitiy... and best of all inexpensive up-cycling.

  2. I would add to Part 4 to use parchment paper or newsprint to prevent ruining one's iron for all time! (This, I am sure you knew!)
