Class Activity
Assignment 3: Fibres, Behaviours, Uses and Care
Materials needed:
labelled swatch set provided by the teacher
collection of off-cuts and scraps
textbook
1. In your textbook, read about the four fundamental types of fibre: cellulose, protein, silk and synthetic.
2. Sort the labelled swatches into the four categories.
3. Create a table to organize your observations of the characteristics of the four categories of fibres, including such characteristics as texture, drape, smell, friction, fraying, and any other observations you deem relevant.
4. Use those observations to help you find two swatches from the scrap bag for each category of fibre.
5. What techniques could you use to identify fibres you weren`t sure of?
How would you indentify blends of two categories of fibre, such as a wool silk blend or a cotton polyester blend?
Interesting idea to identify fibres using other characteristics (fraying and sheen). It is that darned poly blend that fools me all the time (having bought what I thought was cotton to find out with a burn test that these were polys).
